Some 50 years after it was shut down, Berlin’s Siemensbahn is being reactivated—a project of historic significance. By 2029, the 1920s-era line, which is a designated historic landmark, is set to resume operations and provide access to Siemens AG’s new Siemensstadt Square.
The overall planning has been entrusted to the Siemensbahn engineering consortium, consisting of Sweco GmbH and KREBS+KIEFER Ingenieure GmbH. The focus is on a special engineering highlight: the approximately 800-meter-long riveted steel viaduct from 1928—with over 150,000 rivets that had to be precisely measured and recorded in highly detailed BIM models (LOD 400).
To efficiently manage the enormous volumes of data and align the point clouds from laser scanning with the existing models, KREBS+KIEFER relied on a powerful software solution—including Scalypso and ALLPLAN.
The result was impressive: In 2025, the engineering consortium received the BIM Champions Award from buildingSMART in the design category. This is a striking example of how digital design methods and historic buildings can be successfully combined. The full article is available at Business Geomatics (in German):
